Luminus Group – An interview with Howard Kennedy

Luminus Group is the only not for profit organisation to enter the Howard Kennedy Employer of the Year category of the National Business Awards. Howard Kennedy met Executive Operator for Operations Nigel Finney, Senior Supervisor Tommy McCrum and Neighbourhood Liaison Officer Felicity Bell to discover why.

Luminus Group is a not for profit organisation that owns some 8,000 homes, including two homeless hostels and 500 homes for the elderly and those in need of specialist care, across Eastern England. It provides homes and communities for some 50,000 people.

Established 17 years ago, it is a challenging sector, emotionally and physically demanding, that demands much from its 250 staff. Its leadership is inspirational.

"When pitching to the National Business Awards dragons, we asked for volunteers," explains Nigel. "Tommy and Felicity stepped forward to help tell our story."

I deal with our tenants’ issues day in, day out, but being asked to explain why we should win this award is far more personal.

It was, says Felicity, a nerve-wracking experience. "I deal with our tenants’ issues day in, day out, but being asked to explain why we should win this award is far more personal."

Tommy agrees: "I’ve worked both in the private and public sector. The focus here is not on the bottom line, but on people. It is enormously rewarding and we wanted to share this."

Luminus Group’s HR approach is to encourage staff outside of their comfort zone. "We want to encourage, support and inspire our staff," says Nigel. "They will then go that extra mile. Our staff make or break our organisation.”

We will explore new initiatives and business models, but our staff will be at the heart of our future.
Nigel Finney, Luminus Group

The social housing sector is facing far-reaching and fundamental change, and Luminus Group is ambitious and enthusiastic for its future. "We will explore new initiatives and business models, but our staff will be at the heart of our future."

We want to encourage, support and inspire our staff. They will then go that extra mile. Our staff make or break our organisation.
