Law Rocks! charitable status with support from Howard Kennedy

Law Rocks! has today announced that is has secured charitable status, with the support from law firm Howard Kennedy.

The law firm advised Law Rocks! on its application to the Charities Commission on a pro-bono basis, with charity status confirmed on Monday 16 January.

Law Rocks! was founded in 2009 by Nick Child, a Managing Director at Navigant, and Damian Hickman, CEO at the International Dispute Resolution Centre. Its aim is to promote music education for underprivileged young people and to raise funds for not-for-profit organisations by combining the power of music and the generosity of the global legal community.

It achieves this through epic battle of the bands competitions in cities across the globe, turning legal professionals into rock stars.

Law Rocks! in the UK raises between £30-40,000 every year, and has since 2009 raised more than US$2m around the world. Its first battle of the bands competition saw just six bands from law firms and barristers’ chambers compete at the legendary 100 Club on London’s Oxford Street.

In 2013, Law Rocks! was made an official part of the IBA annual conference, and in 2016, more than 140 bands across 17 global cities competed for top honours – including Howard Kennedy’s own band Take It To The Bridge. 2017 will see Law Rocks! form a part of both the Dubai and Hong Kong arbitration weeks.

Law Rocks! has grown year on year, and obtaining charitable status will allow us raise more money, take advantage of the tax reliefs on gift aid, and deliver more money to those charities we and the bands support.  It will add a greater degree of professionalism to everything we do.

Law Rocks! has appointed four trustees – Sir Vivian Ramsey, Ted Scott of Secretariat International, Nick Child and Damian Hickman.

Law Rocks! was advised by consultant Alan Banes, a charities specialist, having been introduced by Peter Birkett, a Real Estate lawyer at Howard Kennedy and lead guitarist in Take It To The Bridge.

Law Rocks! has clearly tapped into a hitherto unknown pool of talent in the legal profession and given them the chance to be the rock stars they perhaps always wanted to be, while raising considerable amounts of money for good causes around the world.  We are delighted to have been able to play a part in securing charitable status for Law Rocks!, putting them on a strong footing for future growth.

Law Rocks! will on 16 March be holding its ‘Six of the Best’ concert at its regular home, the 100 Club, with winners of previous events battling for ultimate glory. Bands from Howard Kennedy, Addleshaw Goddard, Ashursts, TWM, Irwin Mitchell and Simons Muirhead & Burton will be competing.
